Course description

This workshop will take place at Sala Beckett.

One of the most acclaimed directors of theatre today, who directed El chico de la última fila last season at the Sala Beckett, proposes a course to consider new ways of doing theatre after COVID-19.

Adaptation is a sign of intelligence, and in these current times we have to be alert to this principle. The new “normal”, if it is new and if it is normal, is going to force us for a while, we don’t know for how long or in what way, to do theatre in a different way. More limited capacities at venues and the danger of contagion will form part of the theatrical art. For that reason, I think that it is urgent that we develop our dramatic art in the public space: the space from which it initially emerged and to which it continually returns.

The aim is to try to develop scenes from universal dramatic literature, whether classical or contemporary, but adapting them to a theoretically “non-theatrical” setting. Intervention in the public space for the theatrical experience is not at all new; the Dionysian festivals in Ancient Greece used to do it. So let’s pay tribute to Dionysus and take up this old tradition and make it contemporary.

The material to be provided by participants is a monologue of their free choice, and if two of the participants prefer to do a scene together, it will be welcome. The choral work will be my responsibility and will be about Fear: Boldness or Panic.
